about us
The Hopeful River Project is an ambitious initiative that addresses river pollution and its impacts on human health and livelihoods in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. It is a collaboration of a diverse group of professionals who are combining to create a new and different way to make a lasting difference on the people and river ecosystem of the Tinishu Akaki River basin.
Launched in 2008 EC (2016) the project is in the early phases of developing a multi-tier, long-term plan that will engage the necessary local actors to create momentum for a healthy river ecosystem that supports a healthy urban community.
our vision
This Hopeful River Project envisions that
in the Tinishu Akaki River system and riverine communities:
1. All threats to health caused by contaminated waters
are eliminated;
2. livelihood production opportunities
are abundant and pursued; and
3. quality of urban life is enhanced by means of environmental rehabilitation (natural water systems, soil, and riverbed vegetation).
our mission
To realize our vision, we will
** raise awareness to pollution and linked erosion ** reduce the waste that goes into the river – solid, liquid and human waste ** provide technical support, i.e. dumpsters, dry toilets, plastic recycling, water collection mechanisms ** run waste collection and recycling campaigns ** rehabilitate the land around the river – to abate erosion, promote healthy vegetation and improve public spaces ** providing alternative water sources – to improve health of regular users ** introduce sustainable farming around the river ** foster Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives **
